Saturday and Grocery Shopping

I'm going to have to go to the market today. I also need to plan my meals for the next week so I will know what I need. I never did get around to cleaning this week either so I will try to get that done too. I did finish my book though. That's what I did instead of cleaning. I read. The name of the book was "Zealot: The Life and Times of Jesus of Nazareth" by Reza Aslan. It was very interesting.

I will buy groceries for the church's food basket too. It was nearly empty last week.

Bob and I will go to breakfast at Eggberts this morning. I forgot we were going to do that and ate a biscuit so I could take my blood pressure tablet.

More later...

Friday at Last

This morning I will go to Independence for my hair appointment. After that, Bob and I will go to exercise class. Then he will go to his new doctor and he wants me to go with him. His former doctor has left his Coffeyville practice.

Bob wants to eat out after that. I don't have a plan for anything for lunch/dinner except the leftovers from yesterday.

Later this evening we will pick up Marilyn and go to Cherryvale to a political meeting with the Democrats. I'm not a Democrat but I am very unhappy with my Republican party right now..especially with our governor, who is dismantling programs for the poor.

More later...

We attended the Democrat party meeting over at Cherryvale and met the candidate for governor. He seems a nice young man but really has no charisma and I'm not sure he has a program. I don't think he can beat Brownback, who has a lot of money behind him. I hope I'm wrong.

The Republican party here in Kansas has done a lot of damage to many aspects of our economy. Governor Brownback wants to eliminate the Kansas income tax. Well, that money to run the state has to come from somewhere and so he has the led the movement to increase property taxes. That puts the burden on property owners which is why I sold my house and am renting.

Then he eliminated the food sales tax refund for low income Kansans. Next he eliminated the homestead exemption for seniors. Then his administration cut funding for education. The colleges and schools are now struggling. They shifted tax for big business from real estate tax to personal property tax and that dramatically reduced their taxes and shifted that burden to property owners. It's been a mess. He refused to increase medicaid for low income people even though the federal government would have paid the difference. So the federal government even had to set up their exchanges for the Affordable Care Act.

A Quiet Thursday

This should be a relatively quiet day. I have nothing planned for the day. I should do some housework. I could even do some laundry although I don't have much to do.

Sometime this afternoon, I will put a coat of paint on the birdbath. Strange...that birdbath rusts. Every since I bought it it has continued to rust. Last week, in Independence, I went to the hardware store and bought a product I had never even heard of called Rust-oleum Rust Reformer. Yesterday afternoon I cleaned the rust as best I could with a soap pad after using steel wool on it. I rinsed it and let it dry and then spray painted this product on it. After letting it dry for 24 hours, I will spray it with regular Rust-oleum brown spray paint. Then we will see if that stops the rust. One would not imagine that a metal bird bath would rust. After all it's supposed to hold water for the birds.

I will need to get some money from the bank today. I am nearly out and I have a hair appointment tomorrow in Independence.

We will have tuna bean supper today at noon. It is a relatively new recipe. I think we have had it once before.

It calls for:

1/4 c. minced onion

2 T oleo

1 can cream of celery soup

1/2 c. milk

1 can tuna, drained and flaked

2 hard cooked eggs

2 T chopped pimento

1 can green beans (cooked)

Cook onion in oleo until soft but not browned. Blend in soup, milk, tuna, eggs and oimento. Heat..stir often. put green beans in dish and pour creamed tuna over.

Serves 6 (do half recipe for 3)

We will have that with potatoes and cottage cheese with applesauce.

Another Busy Wednesday

This was a pretty busy day. It started with the exercises which I missed on Monday. After that, some of us went to Utopia for coffee and a scone. Then we came home and I started the pizza. My pizza turned out pretty salty. I had included anchovies which are very salty. We ate some of it but I threw some of it away...way too salty.

After all that I went up to pay my sales tax and registration on my new car (new to me). It was over $1260. Kansas taxes are very high. The city, the county and the state all got a piece of that tax money. Until I get my social security I am very nearly broke. I could transfer some more of the money from my savings but it is going very fast.

Tomorrow I have nothing much going. I will probably clean house.

Then on Friday I will go to Bob's doctor appointment with him at 10:45. He is changing doctors. His usual doctor moved away. It's time again. Also Friday I have my hair appointment and Friday evening we will go over to Cherryvale to meet the Democrat candidate for governor. If he is anyone I am impressed with, I will vote for him. Our Republican governor has eliminated the food sales tax refund for seniors and the homestead exemption for seniors too. He is all for the wealthy and against the poor. He also has cut back on Medicaid for the poor. It's true they should watch carefully that the deserving poor get that benefit and not the freeloaders.

This evening I am just watching TV.

Sore Arms on Tuesday

I woke up at 4:00 this morning with very sore arms. I took some Aleve with milk and they are alright now at 6:00. I notice they are cold when they ache. That may play into the ache. I can't figure it out and unfortunately neither can the doctors. They have given up.

I have my hair appointment this morning a little later..at 10:30. I will get our Parmesan Chicken ready to go into the oven before I leave for that appointment then I will just put it in the oven when I get home and fix the potatoes. We will have cottage cheese and applesauce and veggies with it. Then for dessert we will have fruit.

Yesterday afternoon was very frustrating. The certified letter did turn out to be my title and I had hopes to get the car registered. First I waited a half hour in line to see one of the clerks. Then when I did get into the chair she asked me if the police had inspected the car. I had forgotten that the car has to be inspected if it came from out of state. So I went over to the police department to have a form filled out. All the inspection was was to check the odometer reading for the mileage. For that, they charged me $20.

Then it was back to the tag office. I got right in this time. The clerk began filling out the title again and this time she stopped and said the stamp from the dealer that's supposed to be here (pointing to a place on the title) is not there so you will have to get that stamp. I went out to the car and called the Honda agency and talked to the office. The woman who answered said she had been there 15 years and had never put one of those stamps on a title and she had never had a problem before. Instead of me making another 90 mile round trip back to Bartlesville, she said she would just put it in the mail. Then I can put the stamp on the correct area and once again go up to the tag office to get the car registered. I also have to pay the sales tax in Kansas on it. That will be another almost 10% on the sale price. They get you coming and going.

Leslie and I had a nice visit yesterday in Bartlesville. We had lunch at McCalister's and it was good. She bought a few things....some hand soap and an extension for her USB cord. I got back about 12:30 and went through that trying afternoon experience.

Well, the Republican House has managed to shut down the government. They refuse to let the Affordable Care Law alone. They tried twice to pass a bill on to the Senate that would have defunded it or delayed it. Both times the Senate refused to consider it. The Republicans don't seem to realize that it is the law of the land. All those affected will just have to put the cost of insurance in their budgets. That beats getting sued by doctors and hospitals for their fees. There are tons of medical bankruptcies at the court house. Folks have to allow for car insurance and home owners insurance or rental insurance so they may as well budget hospitalization too. I recall the fight the government had over Medicare and it is now the salvation for seniors. I think the same thing happened over Social Security and it has been a lifesaver for millions of us seniors.

Another Busy Monday

I was so busy yesterday that I never found time to post. First we went to church and then to dinner at Sirloin Stockade again with a group of five from church. Then I brought Bob back home and went to the hospital to see Jack and Marilyn. Jack was sound asleep. He had too much company and they stayed an hour. He was exhausted. Marilyn had gone home to take a nap too. I tried to call her but realized she was probably trying to get a nap so I hung up. I came back home and went over to pick up Bob and Phyllis F. We went up to Neodesha to John and Sue's 60th anniversary party at the senior center there. We stayed about 45 minutes and visited with several people we had not seen in ages. Then we came home and I began the Sunday afternoon letters. Just as I finished Bob came over and we watched 60 Minutes and several episodes of The Big Bang Theory and had a small glass of the wine I had bought in Branson. Then he went home and I took my bath and went to bed about 9:45. It was a very busy day.

Leslie, my daughter, called last night. She asked me to go to Bartlesville with her. She is having some work done on her car and wants to have lunch today instead of tomorrow. She was on call this weekend and so she gets today off. I told Bob I would cook tomorrow instead of today. I seldom get a chance to be with Leslie anymore. She is so busy.

I need to go to the market today and also to the post office. I have a certified letter to pick up there. It may be my title to my car. I have been waiting for it so I can pay my sales tax on the car and register it in my name. Other then that, I don't know what it could be. It came while I was in Branson. I also need gasoline. So I have some running around to do before I leave to meet Leslie.

Tomorrow Bob and I are having Parmesan Chicken for lunch. I will fix some boiled potatoes to go with it and a veggie. he will provide the salad. Perhaps we will just have some cottage cheese and applesauce. Then I will fix a dessert too. I'm not sure just what yet. It could be fruit.

More later....
