Quiet Monday

I have a quieter week this week. I will fix dinner today and then go to work and then after work I will mow. I have a hair appointment in Independence tomorrow and I really need it. Then I want to work in the morning on Wednesday so Bob and I can go over to Just Us and have lunch. It's been awhile since we've been there.

Today I will fix swiss steak and boiled potatoes for lunch. We will have salad and veggies and then pudding for dessert.

I have a Chaplain's in-service on Thursday at 11:30. Then on Friday I have a busy day. I have a 7:00 hair appointment, a 10:00 eye doctor appointment and then after dinner at noon, a 1:00 class reunion committee meeting here. But miracles of miracles, I have nothing planned for Saturday.

The next week starts October. It is very busy again. Every weekend in October, I have something going on. But in November, I am starting to keep my life simpler. The holidays will be coming soon and I want to enjoy them. I would like to go back to Branson in November. And, before our season tickets expire, I would like to go one time in December.

On the political scene, there's a lot of half truths being promoted as well as some false claims. But the fact that politifact.com checks out all the rhetoric and rates it for the American people is helpful in sorting out the truth from the half truths. Once again, I suggest my readers check out the politifact.com link on my sideboard to sort out the real truth. We certainly can't use what the candidates and their staffs say as truth on any question. As an example, note what Romney said last night on 60 Minutes against what he said in May with the very rich he was talking to at that fundraiser. Last night he said he would represent 100% of the American people. That's not what he said in May, when he said 47% of the American people didn't matter to him because they were not taxpayers and they didn't really matter to his campaign since they depended on the government for support.

What he said in a direct quote was this:

In his remarks, Romney used broad strokes to characterize millions of people who he said solidly support President Barack Obama.

"There are 47 percent of the people who will vote for the president no matter what," Romney said in the video. "All right, there are 47 percent who are with him, who are dependent upon government, who believe that they are victims, who believe the government has a responsibility to care for them, who believe that they are entitled to health care, to food, to housing, to you-name-it. That that's an entitlement. And the government should give it to them. And they will vote for this president no matter what.

"And I mean the president starts out with 48, 49 percent … he starts off with a huge number," Romney continued. "These are people who pay no income tax. Forty-seven percent of Americans pay no income tax. So our message of low taxes doesn’t connect. So he’ll be out there talking about tax cuts for the rich. I mean, that’s what they sell every four years. And so my job is is not to worry about those people. I’ll never convince them that they should take personal responsibility and care for their lives."

Taxes are a contentious issue in the presidential campaign, and the statistic Romney mentioned was sure to pique the attention of the ostensible 1-percenters in his audience.

That's true, Balisha. But October weekends are filled too. It will be November before I can relax again.
